I am planning ahead looking at hopefully buying somewhere in the next 18 months. My IVA is due to finish in June next year and will be in its 7th year after it was extended "under the discretion" of debt free direct. Still unsure of why they did this but got rather fed up of arguing with them. Im just wondering what I can do to maximise my chances of getting a mortgage when I'm ready. Im not going to have a massive deposit so I'm really concerned that this is just a dream that I won't be able to make reality. any advice would be appreciated.

No harm speaking to Ryan one of the forum brokers who specialises in helping to get mortgages for people with past ivas. He will be able to advise your best route over the coming months so you are ready once iva is finished. Ryan's contact details can be found under ask the expert or the members A-Z list. There is also Shaun who offers support too.

The bigger the deposit you can get the better. You may find you have to do a bit of rebuilding before jumping into a mortgage.

And cleaning up credit files is a must.

What sort of deposit do you expect to have saved up?

I was thinking the same (along the lines of a mortgage) I completed my IVA 18 months ago - however I am 48 so I believe I can only get a 20 year mortgage anyway - if Im lucky. ~saving up just in case
IVA complete March 2014 after 6 years.

Hi All,
We have been able to get mortgages for people with only a 5% deposit once the IVA is cleared from all records.

Thanks for all your replies. Ryan, can I clean up my credit rating if the iva is still active? It's been over six years but for some reason is still going. Ive been told now it will end in June 2016, just hope they don't extend it again. I pay my share every month and can only hope my ex husband is doing the same!! My deposit will be between 5-10% hopefully.

Hi
I would think this is something you can do now in preparation for next year but whenever you are ready.
The reports are normally free and at least you can then be ready for next year, as soon as you get the IVA completion certificate.
