My mother has vascular dementia/alzheimers and is currently owing £20,000 in serivce charges on her leasehold flat.

As I am in the process of filing for Power of Attorney by completing the relevant Court of Protection forms, I am being chased by the managing agents in relation to paying this amount back.

As I have had to stop work in order to care for her I would be very grateful for any advice as to how I should proceed.

Hi and welcome,

I have no idea on this one but do suggest you speak to the agents and explain what is happening and also take some legal advice.

Sorry to hear about her illness. How awful for you.
Is this something she is able to pay? If not you will want to seek insolvency advice on her behalf.

With the Power of Attorney, have you done it just for health reasons or for financial as well.

If not the latter then nobody will deal with you without your mothers permission.

Without the financial POA your mother would still be able to appoint you as her agent with an IP on a firm by firm basis -- assuming she still has the capacity.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

This is the problem with vascular dementia, which my father had. We had to do it quickly so we could sort out his financial things.
