Interview with Chris Daw director of the Debt People

Tell us a little about your company:
The Debt People is a licensed insolvency firm, made up of highly experienced advisers, insolvency administrators and insolvency practitioners.  We always offer the best possible advice and everything will be explained in simple terms, to enable our clients to make the right decisions.

What is the toughest part about having a debt problem?
Undoubtedly the worrying and the fear. We find that most of our clients problems are solved simply by asking us for advice and handing over the problem to us as trained debt professionals.

Why do you think so many people are getting into trouble with debt today?
Mainly because it is so easy to get credit these days, even if you cannot afford the repayments.

There has been an increased interest in student debt from the media. What is your companies view on the seemingly ever increasing levels of student debt?
This is inevitable, as the Government moves away from state funding of higher education in order to massively increase the total number of students.  Sadly this is unlikely to change in the future as student numbers continue to rise.

What does your company offer to help people who are “in over their heads”?
We are a complete debt solutions company and we have relationships with other companies for those people who do not qualify for an IVA.  There is always a solution to any debt problem and when people call The Debt People, we will always point them to the right solution for them.

The number of IVA cases seems to be increasing faster than those of Bankruptcy. Why do you think this is?
An IVA is a much less extreme solution then bankruptcy.  IVAs do not affect people's careers and allow them to keep their homes, which will often be lost in bankruptcy.

Given the general increase in the number of people in debt, where do you think people are finding information about debt solutions such as IVA’s?
The press and the internet are providing more and more information, including websites like ours - www.thedebtpeople.co.uk

Is there a common denominator amongst clients who turn to your company for help (apart from obviously being in debt)?
The only common link is that they have all decided to take action to sort out their debt problems.  Apart from that they come from all walks of life; doctors, lawyers, builders, bank clerks, police officers - in fact, just about every occupation you can think of.
