I've been talking to an ip about an iva he's sending me a proposal but I don't think i want to go through with it now as it's causing my wife stress and I'm not really coping very well .I've found a way I can pay my debts so do I have to sign my proposal.or can I back out now. As without my signature it's not legally binding

Depending on any terms of engagement you have agreed to regarding costs you are free to stop the process before the creditors meeting. Most (but not all) IPs will not charge for work which does not lead to an IVA being put in place.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

Send them an email asking them to stop all activity as you have decided to reconsider your options at this stage and do not want to proceed to creditor meeting stage.

That way you will have evidence of stopping the process before creditors meeting.
