Both me and my wife have debt accounts now owned by collection agencies however these accounts do not show up on any of our credit reports, this includes both Equifax and Experian, is there a reason why? These accounts are quite substantial amounts and even the original debts are not listed either, for example Lloyd's account in arrears then sold to a collection agency, even the original Lloyd's accounts are not visible on the reports.

The three credit agencies only show what is reported to them -- some creditors report to only one or two, some do not report at all. So they tend to differ -- which is why, when you need to check your records, you need to interrogate all three.
