I've had the email I attached below just come into my inbox - is it genuine? Is this really from MBNA? I didn't realise they were part of Bank of America.

Anyway, also tied up in this is, if it is genuine, should I reply to it?

*If you are already in contact with MBNA,

please ignore this email**

Hello,

Please call MBNA on 01244 879182 (24 hour overseas

Hi Missy

Ive never heard of a creditor contacting you via this method. Due to the credit/fraud scams that go on I would refrain from responding or not at all.
As all banks warn in there online banking - they will never contact you via email asking you to supply your private information.
Looking at the wording they are not asking you to confirm anything other than to respond. Which if I think you did - they would then ask for your personal details - so to me this email is a no no.
And why would someone from the UK want to ring an office in the USA? Sorry I might be wrong but this looks alittle dodgy to me x

To be honest Missy, I would steel well clear of this method of contact, one of my creditors was MBNA and it was a European Bank Ltd (MBNA EBL) there was a US subsidiary which was taken over by the Bank of America. Most of the background is on Wikipedia but I would tread carefully contacting them from an email, there are lots of iffy stuff floatin about pretending to be from banks but are not. I was only contacted (continuously) by phone and letter by them. If in doubt call the number of MBNA customer services and make discreet inquiries.

I would ignore it anyway. Finger would be poised over the delete button!

It's stupid isn't it - I'm normally the first one to ignore those phishing emails but with this it's made me doubt myself.

Anyway, I've decided not to reply. I don't pick up the phone to them so I guess there's no reason to email!

Thanks everybody

I ignore all these type of emails I recieved on from HSBC yesterday saying that someone has tried to access mt account as I no longer have a HSBC account I don't care.

My thoughts are if a company really needs to speak to me they will telephone or send a letter through snail mail.

I must admit I get the HSBC once quite a lot and I have never even had an account with them lol.

The best one I have had recently was the Inland Revenue telling me that I have a tax refund due and please complete my details including national insurance number - made me laugh when I read it, damn con artists and spammers!!! [:D][:D][:D]

I had a Virgin Credit card through MBNA and they contacted me via email many a time.

I receive e-mails allegedly from HSBC although I have never had an account with them.

I also receive e-mails concerning my World Of Warcraft account - I don't have one.

I get loads of phishing emails! The favourites at the moment are Paypal. I just forward them on to their security department.

I get loads telling me I have either won a lottery or am a beneficiary (I should now be the richest person in the entire universe!) or someone wants to deliver a parcel to me!

The sad thing is that some people believe them.

It look fairly genuine to me - but probably only one way to find out and give them a call rather than responding to an unsolicited e-mail.
