I am currently going through the process of applying to the police force here in South Wales. I have passed all tests etc but am now just waiting for the final stage.
I have been informed that an IVA would not ruin my chances of getting into the police force but bankruptcy will?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You do need to check what the policy is for South Wales, perhaps an anonymous call to HR to ask?

Hi Robert,

I dont like to be a bearer of bad news but according to their website (http://www.south-wales.police.uk/en/con ... -eligible/) it says "Applicants who are the subject of a current Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) will not be considered"

Did it ask you about your financial status on your application? I remember appplying years ago and it asked about ccj's etc..... Still might be worth the phone call though.

Good Luck!

You can be a special though can't you? A friend of mine is a special for malisgate (Telford) and he went bankrupt last year!

Hi
Why would being in an IVA prevent you from being a suitable Police Officer ?
I have many clients who are employed as Police officer and have gone into IVAs

I'm sure if you are a serving officer and go into an IVA, it does not effect your employment as a police officer.( I'm trying to find the article I read before!)

Just effects new applications, which really does not make alot of sense [:(]

Im sure its something to do with the view that you may be more vulnerable to taking bribes from criminals.
Im sure I've read Jan Say this somewhere?
If this is one of the reasons, I can sort of understand why.
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

I think you're right unfortunately Lyns. To me someone with debts is more of a risk than someone who has gone into an IVA or gone BR as these are a matter of public record.

I contacted Surrey Police regarding joining and they will accept applications from someone who is BR 3 years after they are discharged. Unfortunately I can't apply as they won't accept applications unless you have passed an exam - the exam costs nearly £700, and doesn't guarantee a job so I can't afford to take the chance. Ridiculous! Grrrrr!

Sorry for going off on a tangent, I'm on my soapbox now!

Hi

I am in the Metropolitan Police and when you apply they credit check you to ensure you are not in financial difficulties as I believe they feel some peoples integrity may be put at risk if someone is offering sums of money for information etc. If you are already employed they will do everything they can to help you with your financial difficulties and support you as an employee. Existing staff who have gone bankrupt can retain their positions as long as they are open and honest with HR and there is no cause for concern for their integrity and professionalism.

New recruits is unlikely, even specials, as above mentioned you will still have the same powers as an ordinary PC and access to restricted information and systems. As a new recruit you will not have evidence of years of service confirming your character that an existing member of staff has.

If you're a serving officer you are fine, but they won't entertain new recruits until you have been free from either an IVA or BR for three years.

Stupid, but these days they can be fussy as hardly any forces are recruiting these days, and they have waiting lists of people wanting to join.

Such a shame when people are wanting to join and would possibly make a really good Police Officer. My cousin has been in the police force for 40 years so it must be good for him. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
