I don't usually post personal information on the forum, but because I often refer to my little dog Jess I thought I ought to let forum friends know that we had to have her put to sleep earlier this evening.

Tony and I are absolutely heartbroken - as those of you who have pets will understand - but I am trying to remember all of the happy memories of her rather than dwelling on our sadness. It is not easy, as there are signs of her all around the house, but I know we will get through this and that she has gone to a better place.

Cannot quite believe that yesterday we were enjoying a lovely walk in the country and that today she just gave up the ghost, but at the fine old age of 16 I guess it was something we knew was just around the corner. Doesn't make it any easier, but as she was such a lovely little dog I do hope that somewhere there is a doggy heaven where she is now busying herself chasing rabbits.

I'm so sorry Mel, I know how much Jess meant to you.

She had a wonderful life with people who loved her very much and although it's painful at the moment you'll have loads of happy memories of her.

My mum's last dog was 18 when she had to be put to sleep, and although she was a great age it was still a shock when we finally lost her. Although you know it will happen one day it's still such a shock. I've still got Cindy's bowl, and although it's just in a cupboard I can't bring myself to get rid of it.

RIP Jess - may you find many rabbits to chase little one xxx

I'm so sorry to hear that Mel, I know you both loved her dearly, but she is at peace now.

I do know what you are going through and my thoughts are with you.

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
If you bury her in this spot, she will
come to you when you call - come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
her, nor resent her coming,
for she belongs there.

"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by her
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.

"The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of her mistress."

That is beautiful Ray and of great comfort because it seems to sum her up so well.

Thank you all for your kind and generous wishes - it is not very often that I need this forum as a prop, but I am so glad of it this evening.

My deepest sympathies to you both.

Pets are just as much a part of a family as people in my experience and our last family dog departed 9 years ago and I still think of her, but it's always the good memories that make me smile and laugh. xx

Mel, good thoughts to you both. x

Hope Jess stops before chasing Bright Eyes across Heavens Highway.

Nice one Ray, many people will relate to and remember that one.

Sorry to hear you sad news Mel, pets are such a wonderful part of a family and enrich our lives. Pets accept us for who we are never looking at our short comings. Remember her with fondness and joy.

We still constantly think of the dogs we have lost, even though we now have three who we adore.

I could never be without at least one dog.

I'm going to adopt one of yours Jan - as we are going to have a little break before we get another. I am told that if you get another dog too soon after losing one it can be difficult to love the newcomer as you constantly compare and wish the old one was still around. Want to be sure that we are able to offer the very best of conditions when we are ready to take on board another friend - I even think we will probably get two.
