When I met you I was in my teens
Things were good and I had dreams
Of cars and houses and holidays
And all the stuff a young man craves

It was so easy i'm sure you know
Sign the strip on the back and away you go
To shops and bars without a care
I knew that you were always there

The bills came in and they were paid
3% min was easily made
Your maker liked me, this I know
Cos now and then he told me so

I felt that you were feeling lonely
You needed another, I thought, if only
To share the burden I'd put on you
Would one be enough? better make it two

You looked and felt exactly the same
It wasn't long till he joined the game
Chip and Pin was now the thing
The shiny square was a bit of bling

I thought that we would never part
Friends forever from the start
You were valid, you expired, but always came back
Always in the red, never in the black

The times were changing it wasn't so great
When I counted the team we now were eight
Where did they all come from? how did they get there?
The years of fun were just a blur

The wife and I loved you, the kids did'nt know
Just how we afforded the new Nintendo
But enough is enough, it's now time to end
The lifestyle that seemed to be spend spend spend

The scissors are sharpened and ready to cut
I've made the phone call and I'm sick in my gut
But you started all this, my flexible friend
I took my part, granted, but now I must mend

My life will get better in no time at all
Now that you've gone I'll no longer fall
And your maker isn't a pal any more
No more nice letters coming through my door

An old colleague of mine once did something similar, to the tune of Band Aids "Do They Know It's Christmas" with some brilliant lyric changes, most of which I cannot possibly share with you all, but one that I can share as a taster goes "and there won't be steak in Pontefract this Christmas time, the best that they will get this year is tripe" with obvious apologies to those that may live in said town.

I never had a tune in my head, but I kept readin it back as though Roger McGough was narrating but if anyone can put a melody to it then we may have a hit on our hands LOL

It's a rousing Irish Folk Song popularised by the Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners in the 1960's - you have probably heard it before and should be on YouTube somewhere - it helps to listen to it when you are drunk!
