IVA was due to finish in May 2017 according to a letter from Carrington George dated 21st april 2016 after an extension was agreed by my creditors, variation dated 19th april 2016. I phoned them to see if I could cancel my standing order and they say I still owe 1800 pounds. I have had no communication from them since April 2016. Can they legally do this, even though I have paid according to the new variation. They say my payments were not up to date prior to the variation change

If there are genuine arrears, yes. You need to get them to send you accounts, detailing what these arrears are and when they occured. If you disagree you can counter by showing evidence of the disputed payments ( bank statements).

I agree with Foggy - they need to give you a breakdown of how they believe the arrears are made up/have arisen but if correct you will need to pay your arrears to avoid the IVA failing.
