A family member has offered a lump sum to help me settle my Iva. They have written to him and suggested he seeks legal advice. Can you tell me why they would say that and why would he need legal advice?
It's just a standard phrase so your family member is covered but is not necessary.
Sharing from experiences of dealing with debt
The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.

By law they have to give you 'best advice' and it is always good advice to suggest you check out the legalities. As much as I would like to think they have your best interests at heart, they are covering themselves!
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

I suspect it's so that your family member understands the proposed lump sum payment is to be a gift and not a loan. Therefore if you have a falling out for example they won't be able to legally pursue you for repayment.
