to bake your own bread or buy? I saw baking your own bread listed on a money saving tips website, but given the cost of flour and the price of a value loaf I reckon it is cheaper to buy..although not as tasty, obviously!

What do you all think?

We have a breadmaker (had it for a few years), and hubby bakes all our bread now.

Hovis white bread mix - 27p from Asda. I don't think you need a breadmaker particularly to make it either.

The bread tastes good as well.

That's why I ask..as we have a bread machine and I love love love it!
Maybe I need to shop around for cheaper flour or bread mix..will give Asda a go!

We find sometimes that they have sold out because it is so cheap, but it's worth it to keep trying.

Jan, can you get granary bread mix? I'm not as keen on white bread, but I'd like to have a go at making bread.

I do my own bread, a) because my youngest son is gluten sensitive and b) I just prefer it. I hate cheap bread, so if we buy it, its over £1 now. I have had a new breadmaker, not sure of the price as it was a gift so I can have two different breads on the go. It comes with every bread receipe known to man, so Skip, you could make any kind of bread with it. Receipes for cakes too... I dont use bread mix, its no good for my son, so everything is from scratch. Since we dont like cheap bread (I am not like this with anything else, honest) I have to buy all the ingredients but I only make what we need and its not too bad, price wise. Thats because I get the Tescos own ingredients. There is a fantastic smell in the morning too. I do buy cheap rolls for bait for the other two though.

Skip, you can get granary mix, but it's more expensive, although I think Asda are doing a multi buy at the moment.

Ours is a Morphy Richards, but we have had it a while. Argos usually have a few in there for varying prices.

You just mix it up, you don't need any yeast. Just water and butter and that makes a 2lb loaf.

You can do it in a machine or by hand, but obviously make sure you've bought bread mix, not just bread flour.

Ladyh, our Tesco doesn't sell it. I've only seen it in Asda.

I don't know. I've even checked on Sainsburys site and they don't seem to have any. They've got some other bread mix at 89p, but that's not as cheap as the Hovis.

Lidl might have their own though.

i love home made bread...but darent make it as i would just eat it all the time and i am already too full of carbs.!!! but happy baking to all who can do it

You can also make cakes in them bread makers. My neighbour does and they are lovely.

mmm.. love fresh bread but I just eat it with lurpak.. non stop!! these gadgets put me ioff when you have to clean them.. is it awkward.. I gave my steamer away as was a nightmare to clean and went back to my old fashioned stack of steamer pans[:I]

Same here ang and I fear I would be eating loads of warm bread with butter on it, but I keep looking at them. I have a steamer but just the cooker top one like saucepans so none of that rotten cleaning fiddly bits.
