I've just had one of those brain storming moments, I've been on the look out for a basic bank account, no overdraft,no cheque book...nothing, just a debit or cash card so that I can pay my car tax and any other little bits/debts via the internet as and when they are due.
Basically just a back up account to support my main current account.
Not really had much joy in finding an account that will give me the basics so I then had an idea.
Why not just get a pre paid credit card and load my monthly allowances onto that and then when my car tax etc are due, just use it like a normal CC and pay via the web.
I've just applied for a Virgin 'mastercard' prepaid card, its cost me a tenner to buy but nothing to load if I do it via web and then %2.7 when used.
Basically I will be using it only once or twice a yr and its gotta be better than leaving my 'safety net' funds in a brown envelope on my shelf?
Its certainly saved me the hassle/embarrassment that we all feel of having to go into the high street banks and eat humble pie just to get a basic bank account with no interest etc etc.
Well I thought it was a good idea anyway[8D]

Brilliant idea Endsmeet! ... this is just what I do for petrol etc. The Cashplus card pays a monthly fee of £5 but no fee on transactions, so depending on how much you use it it can be cheaper.

Thank you for the encouragement folks......
I was just sitting there looking around the various banks, online and high street and what you have to do to bank with them, considering its your OWN money and you just want a basic account, somewhere to put YOUR money but have the option to use it when its required and it just hit me......
All I want/need is a facility to pay my cartax online (which I have done for 2 yrs anyway),maybe buy the odd family present online (again which I've done for yrs) and just basically get on with my life and the little expenses that come along but have the 'lazy' option of doing alot of it via the web or saying over the phone 'is mastercard ok?' but knowing thats its MY money that I'm spending[:D]
The pre-paid C.C. gives me a number of things like online purchasing when I need it and somewhere that is reasonably safe to keep my extra moneies as it comes with all the usual protection that a normal C.C. comes with so as long as I'm not careless and lose it......should be no problems and a perfect answer to what I require.

I have two accounts and use one for bills and transfer food etc to the other, it cost nothing, I have a debit card on the second account, everything else is paid by DD.
I have a friend who gets paid weekly, each week she opens her wages one day late, on the eight day, eveentually she gets two pay packets and saves this money, good idea, me thinks.

hi endsmeet
Look on the internet for Credit Union,
You can open a savings account with them and about a week before you need the money you can ring them and tell them you need to withdraw money from your account..
they will give you a cheque ( one option is to have a cash cheque, where they give you a letter and you take both to the CO-OP bank plus ID ie passport) or transfer it into you bank account ( not advisable as it take a bit longer)
Only drawback is that the interest is minimal

I set up an Abbey National savings account exactly for this purpose and it comes with just a bank card so I can make withdrawals and I have a standing order that goes in every month from our joint account that way when the car tax is up for renewal I've got the monthly sat there waiting!!!!
