Hi, my husband has been paying into an IVA and he has had an e-mail from his bank (who were not one of his creditors) saying that they are closing his account. It is only a current account and he does not owe them any money. Is this allowed?

Hi Rebecca and welcome to the forum. Yes, your husband's bank can close his account as he is in an IVA. HSBC and First Direct do this as company policy.

Hi - I came home on Friday to exactly the same letter from First Direct - I was half expecting it but considering the IVA has been running since September am surprised it has taken this long! Luckily I have had the forsight to make alternative arrangements in case this day came so luckily we have a different account to move to.
I still would like to know where it says so in their small print though because it doesn't!

Hi
As Skippy states HSBC and First Direct have a policy of trawling the insolvency register looking for people that have active acounts.
They should give notice though

Does anyone have any tips on which bank would offer a basic bank account to someone who is paying into an IVA?

This is something that I always find a great irony. It is those amongst us who are facing our debt problems and addressing the issues who, in the end, will be the more secure financially. Meanwhile, the banks seem to carry on supporting those who run up more debt!

Halifax Easycash is another good account if you are an internet user, you get a Visa/Electron debit card and all banking can be done on line, the Halifax web site is very easy to use, I find it ideal for all my banking needs, I visit the web site daily so I always know exactly how much money I have available and I can track all my regular monthly payments.
