I have been in an IVA which is running successfully for 2 years now. I have a basic account with the Co-operative bank which issues a visa electron card. The account is fine but i would like to know where if possible to get a visa debit card which is more acceptable than the Visa Electron. What is your advise please and what banks offer alternatives. Thank you.

Andrew
I have a coop account but as I opened before i got into difficulty and pre trying for an iva, They gave me a visa debit card no problem. I don't see any harm in you asking them if you can change, the only thing you would have to do is upgrade your account from a basic to a standard current account.
no harm in asking, they can only say no

Best of luck for your creditors meeting on monday - fingers crossed for you x

Visa electrons, masetro, solo are all associated with plain old debits on your bank Account from UK. Their acceptance is very good especially in retail in the UK only......but travel and international purchase??? Bad

POST IVA commencement - no Bank will issue a real VISA or MASTERCARD debit card that will have worldwide 100% acceptance.

I doubt any bank will upgrade the basic card as that means upgrading the account as well. All these cards have credit/debit functions as one.

People ahave opened normal bank accounts pre IVA could have them closed if the Banks do an IVA sweep. And you don't want to alert them just to find out if it is their policy? HSBC will close all normal Bank accounts with people on IVAs.

You will really need a VISA or Master card debit if you do a lot of land or air travel. BA will not take V E', EasyJet does, Ryanair NO, Virgin also No, GNER No, and National express -??

You can get a prepaid Mastercard for special purposes which is what I do, use it in a blue moon for travel.

Virgin money, Cashplus or the Sun Card.....the best Mastercard prepaid around.

Hi
The maestro mastercard from Think Banking is welcome worldwide[have used it in the USA].This account is open to all, post IVA or Bankruptcy. There is a £12.50 monthly fee and £25 set up fee. From January 2008 there will be an additional fee for second card holders.
The secret is to sort your new bank before your IVA is in place and to not open an account with an existing creditor or HSBC/First Direct[who are known to look at the insolvency register and cancel accounts]

Solo card is fabulous, doubles up as a Masetro abroad too. I have an IVA with Natwest as a creditor, but the account was opened online fine? Interestingly enough they never touched my savings account when prior to the IVA and the defaults occurred as it was still registered with my folks home from my Univ days.

I didn't dare to go as for a normal Nat' acount incase they credit score and see the IVA default. RBS who are part of the Natwest group found my IVA and declined even a basic account online??

Just out of interest.... If I do an IVA (I bank with HSBC and they are a creditor), and before I do it I open a LloydsTSB account and they issue me a standard bank account/cheque book etc, am I allowed to keep the standard LloydsTSB account on the IVA being granted -- assuming that the HSBC account would be frozen/closed ??

I was allowed to keep my Lloyds TSB account when I was in my IVA - I asked them to remove the overdraft (I didn't owe anything) but didn't explain why.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Hi Sorry this reply isn't relevant to this thread but I can't seem to see this anywhere on the forum.

Call me dense but why is there adverts for credit cards in the margin??

I'm not the brightest button but isn't this a forum for people with debt problems??

Hi Andrew,

The high street lenders that provide a basic bank account with a debit card are as follows:

- Bank of Scotland, Easy Cash Account
- Clydesdale, Ready Cash Account
- Co-operative, Cashminder Account
- Halifax, Easycash Account
- Natwest, Step Account

Hope this helps.
