Our Electricity provider made a huge error with billing to us a couple of years ago and now we owe them a lot of money which we are putting through our iva, what are the implications, if any, of this in respect of continuation of supply. We are not able to switch suppliers as they will not let anyone else take it while we owe them money, even though it was their mistake in the first place.

I dont think they can stop you from switching suppliers. When I moved into this house last year, there was a gas card meter. It was very cold and I couldnt obtain a gas card, B Gas kept saying they had sent one but didnt as they were in short supply. I asked them to change the meter, they arranged a time and a date but didnt turn up. They said I owed them £99 for gas I had used (they came out 4 times and gave me emergency supply). I was so sick of worrying about running out I phoned N power and they changed it from that date. I am still disputing the £99 to B gas as they put 4 lots of £8 in emergency gas, which is £32. Why not give it a try?

This debt is unsecured so potentially you can include it in your IVA. Your IP will be able to advise if you are better to make a payment through a budget in your expenditure, to pay off these arrears or whether the debt can be included, they will take into consideration implications of including this debt in the IVA although I suspect as Lily does that you should be able to change providers if you so wish.

If your IVA is accepted then the accoutn should be closed and another opened. If you want to keep a credit meter (constant supply) then you will most likely be asked for a security deposit. The other alternative would be a prepayment meter. If you have a balance over £100 you will not be able to move to another supplier.

Thanks everyone for your replies, its really nice to have people on the same side as us. We are already finding this forum a great help.

We are in the middle of applying for our iva and have all the worries that go with it.

I have mentioned on some other threads that I am in the Human Resources field. I have been on both sides of the fence when it comes to employment issues/disputes/redundancies. Happy to give any advise I can.
