Well the day has come to declare myself BR. I thought I would be worried but that has subsided, mainly because of reading all the posts on here. I now am worrying about my OR phone call later today, and of course the meeting with the OR.
One problem that I have is that I set up a basic bank account already and all my direct debits as well. I did this mainly as it was so close to the end of the month. I did not want to be left with no money to pay my regular bills etc.
My question is that will I be able to keep this after BR or will it be closed. If I meantion this to the OR today will they allow me to keep it , or do I need to call the bank to sort this out. Its with the Alliance & Leisester.
Have I done the right thing with the bank account or should I have waited???

As it is a basic bank account you should be fine, just mention it to the OR when you speak.
good luck!

Hi,
The OR will inform the bank of your BR it will depend on the bank on whether they will allow you to continue with the account (the OR does not freeze the account) as it is only a basic account you should be ok, i know from this forum that some banks wont allow BR poeple so if you can give the bank a ring explain the situation and i am sure they will tell you if would allow the account to remain active. Mine Barclays where ok and have even allowed me to open a savings account with them.
Good Luck with you BR today.

Good luck today.
Regarding the bank account, I would open a new one as soon as you are made BR. Fudge has had all sorts of problems with A & L as they wouldn't release her money even though the OR didn't have a problem with her keeping the account:

I'm with RBS and the OR had no problem about me keeping the account although it is only a basic one. She did say that she would be informing them of my BR and that they should allow my direct debits to go through. RBS have not frozen or closed my account, nor have I heard anything from them regarding my BR status.
Good luck today!

Well the deed is done, I am officially BR. Thanks to everyone with the problem of my bank account etc. I have now opened a ThinkBank Account. Still waiting for the OR phone call today.
I still may have problems with Alliance & Leicester as my wages dept have said its too late to alter my wage details for this month. So will have to pray I can get my money out next week if the OR says I can.
I will be in dire straits if I cannot do that as have only £50 to my name at the moment.
But at least I do have some food to last for the next week if I am carefull.
This is now quite stressful since I read the threads that Skippy 13 supplied.
I just hope there are no more hicups to contend with.

I'm sorry Upinsmoke, I didn't mean to make things worse for you! I was concerned that you might have problems with A & L and I hoped you could get something sorted out.
I can't see the OR having any problem at all with you taking the money out of your A & L account, and bear in mind that a different branch of the bank will probably have a totally different attitude.
Once again, sorry for worrying you.

No worries Skippy at least I am in the picture. It may have been worse if I did not know. At least I have another bank account set up and hopefully will be able to set up my direct debits and other income for next month.
I will check with OR if I can draw out my money, and keep my fingers crossed that the bank does not close the account before I get my pay.

upinsmoke, well done for getting through today. Trust me, I know how difficult it can be. The OR should be able to sort A&L account out for you, but I was told not to open any accounts until after I was officially BR. D.

Thanks for you wishes douglass, I rang the OR about my A&L account and was told that it would be frozen. But would let me take out the money to live. But also said that I would need to stop all dirct debits and arange to pay another way. What a fool I am, it took me a week to set them all up. Back to square one again.
They are now going to ring me tomorrow, so have waited in all day for nothing.

You're not a fool - you can ask all the questions you want, but until you actually go BR you don't know what it's all about. Also, everyone's experiences are that bit different. Do you know when you will have your OR interview?
