Dear FM's,

Please could someone enlighten me as to whether it is legal to have your details on the insolvency register accessible via a google search. My sister is also in an IVA and she has just called me in a state of panic, she was just playing around on google and decided to search her name, and surprise surprise, her name and all the IVA details were easily viewable on google. I then tried my name but there were no search results and also some names I picked at random on the Insolvency register. THey were also not accessible via Google. While I understand that our names can be accessed by all and sundry, I did not think a mere Google search would yield such intimate details. Please help anyone

Thank you[?]

Hiya, yes it's perfectly legal to access the insolvency register. Anyone can gain information from there regarding whether someone is in an IVA or Bankrupt.
Might not be morally right but it is legal....

Afraid so, the Insolvency Register is public domain so it can be accessed by anyone.

Hi Batawi3, the best way to look at this, is the mere fact that until you even contemplated an IVA or bankruptcy, you would never have entertained searching the register.
I am interested in your stating that a google search brought up your sisters name, I would have thought you would have to go to the insolvency register site and search specifically.
I have googled my own name, but nothing comes up to link me to an IVA, YET!!!!

Yeah BoT, nothing for me either. I guess she may have google insolvency register and then put in her name in the search on that. Maybe we mis-understood the post.

I've just googled mine and my husbands name and they both came up with the iva details and our address. I had to but our full names! This is worrying..

I think it will depend on how common your name is, i.e. Google John Smith and you'd never notice it but a more uncommon or rarer name might trigger it.

Andy, the forum manager, has been campaigning to have access to the insolvency register restricted and I believe you can still sign the petition....

A bit worrying if a simple google search of your name would bring up this info, I thought someone would have to search specifically on the insolvency register.

I will try mine in a moment, although don't know if I want to know[:0]

Worrying if it is a case of seaching google, I was really hoping anyone searching would have to know about the insolvency register first.

I've just googled myself and cannot find anything yet on me. Hope it stays that way!

Hi
This is concerning,I was under the impression that if you simply googled an IVA would not show.
More reason to sign the petition
