During todays Credit- Crisis and everybody having to tighten their Belts I was wondering why there is so little coverage of people who are in the process of IVA's or going through Bankruptcy in the Media.
In the past a Homeowners route out of this situation was to Remortgage
their Property and now even this route has become CLOSED-OFF!!.
What are the Alternatives for people who can't Remortgage and why is there so little coverage of people who are having to settle there Debts with some kind of Debt Solution such as IVA,Bankruptcy,DMP.
I would like to see a few more Case Studies in the Media of people who are in this Predicament and not just statistics to understand how many people are ending up with this problem

Trust deeds are advertised up here in scotland in a very sensible way, they dont make it sound like a miracle cure.

I mean , you never read a story of how IVA's have helped some people. people who are in the Throws of Bankruptcy and how they are coping and what assets they have lost etc.
All you ever read about is how the Credit Crunch is affecting the the Banks which are Suffering such as NR ,Halifax, Alliance and Leicester and Bradford and Bingley.
The only time they mention the consumer is when they say so many homes repossesed but never here there stories

Perhaps this is because the banking industry would rather IVA's were kept as secret as possible. I am sure more people would sort out their finances if they could without going BR!!!

i think it would be a great idea to have some IVA stories out there..maybe andy davies book will help publicises IVAs
and maybe if more case studies were subject to symapthetic media coverage then the whole stigma would be taken off BR and IVA and DMPs etc....
if people could see that it is mostly ordinary folk who have lived ordinary lives and made mistakes.....its not all the glam and show bizz types that go BR
its the person next door and the couple down the road and ME.!!!

Thats a good point TiredofLife,
How many people are there in IVA's,DMP's Bankruptcy it's like some sort of Taboo Subject.
Especially when it comes to the Media.

Most people in financial difficulty do not like to advertise the fact that they are in public. I am regularly approached by journalists to see if I have any clients who would be willing to be interviewed for TV programmes, but most people prefer to keep their affairs private.

Since BR is put into the paper a lot of people enter IVA's to avoid this, an IVA can be kept secret. I dont think many people really feel good about being in debt, its only forums like this that help people regain self belief and a realisation that they are not the only ones facing it all. Generations have changed, each one becoming more and more plastic daft (sorry plastic daft) Its a buy now, pay later culture and the silent world of personal insolvencies are a kind of plastic/buy now pay later cancer. sufferers would rather not talk about.

I must admit my partner really didnt want to do the newspaper article . But when Andy asked i couldnt say no. This forum had helped me so much i felt i had to do something to help.We had a photographer come round to take photos of me and my children my partner didnt want to be in those. It didnt bother me i just thought to myself there are millions in debt out there i didnt really think i was much different than anyone else.
It took all day to take photos as my little lad has autism and would not keep still long enough to take photos hahaha

I would do an interview for a paper, but it would have to be anonymous as no one outside my very immediate family knows about our troubles.
As for photo's - I won't have any taken by family etc, so a newspaper stands no chance!
I'd even do a tv interview if they blanked out my face (would be a good idea to do that anyway!) and changed my voice!

On a lighter note I am waiting for a soap to feature an IVA as a story line. With a help line at the end of the programme[:)]

I'd do an interview, but preferably under a false name as I don't want Dave's mum or ex to find out about my BR!

The closest I have seen a soap get to finanancial difficulties is with Eastenders.
Peggy had the debt collectors round, but surprise, surprise, managed to get it sorted.
Also the Masood family is in the process of sorting their finances out.
None of them ever have to take advise, or go bankrupt or anything. They tackle other controversial subjects - why not this one?
Good idea Jan.
