Hi,

Would appreciate your advice. I am currently going through the process of applying for a job in a sensitive Government Department and wondered as I am in an IVA is it worth me continuing. Does anyone on here work for any Government Department and have an IVA???

Hi there dependant on the Department and your grade I would not see this as a problem. I worked for 23 years in the Insolvency Service and had a member of staff actually working in the office go bankrupt, plus was aware of a number of others in other OR's offices, and bankruptcy was not a problem - we just got another office to deal with the case. So that other staff would not know. I would have thought unless it was a substantial position within say the former GCHQ or similar it would not form a problem, it is far better to have taken steps to sort out your debts than have a debt problem which could put you in a compromised position.

Does it say anything on the application form Ray? Is is possible for you to ring up the HR dept anonymously just to check, or look on the website to see if anything is on there?

Not had to do an application form as such just tests so far so not sure as of yet. I think I will just be honest as I have nothing to hide anyway and just say that I am in an IVA and at least I am trying to pay my debts back. Nothing on the website

I suppose it is better to be honest now rather than find out there are problems once you have the job.

To get a security clearance in most Govt positions the application form may or may not have financial questions.
However if selected for the position you always have to fill in a security clearance form.


Question 11:HAVE YOU OR YOUR PARTNER,

a.Ever been declared bankrupt.
b.been the subject of an adverse Count Court judgement.
c.Ever defaulted on a loan.
d.Been party toa voluntary agreement registered with a County Court.
e.Had repossession proceedings against you.

Question 16

c.Do you currently have,or have you ever had,significant financial difficulties.

Now providing you are honest and up front, you do not leave youself open to blackmail in what could be a position of trust.

Hi there - you would have to answer for part (d)been party to a voluntary arrangement...

This does all depend on the entry level you are applying for and the post/department. I would be upfront with them and tell them

Melenie is quite right and you would answer No to part a.

Be honest with them at all times.

I am a government worker and am in an IVA. I informed my direct line manager and district manager of my IVA in September 2007 when it started and it has gone no further. As long as it does not impact on your ability to do the job then it is ok. I also know of staff going bankrupt when working for the government and the only issue there is they cannot work in a finance function for the duration.

I worked for the MoD with SC level security clearance on a big defence project.

I told them i was in an IVA, had to fill in an additional finance questionnaire and i was granted clearance to be reviewed after a year, which was fine as I would clearly be in a better position.

I really worried waiting for it to come through but it will be fine.

Just heard from my HR department.

As long as you keep things out of the courts you need tell them nothing.

CCJs and Bankrupcy would be a problem, but the IVA way would sort it out!
