I have a relative who is in financial difficulty and I think could benefit from an IVA, however they work for customs and excise and he thinks that he would lose his job if they found out he was in financial difficulty. Do you know if this is the case, it seems it would be a bit counterproductive if true!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Not sure how HMRC work. I would suggest that he makes an anonymous call to his HR to see what the policy is.

Hello,
He definitely needs to check his employee handbook/contract of employment, and an anonymous call to his HR department is an absolute must as Jan quite rightly says. Only today I spoke to a practising accountant who went bankrupt 10 years ago and who now has no option but to do so again, proving, if nothing else, that no one is immune to debt problems.
There is a whole question of discrimination etc on this issue but the answer in the end has to come from his employers.

I have lots of clients who work within the Civil Service, and they have not lost their jobs as a result of being in an IVA. I believe that HMRC like their employees to notify them of financial difficulties, but they cannot force their employees to do this if they do not want to.

Hi there and welcome. I can totally agree with the advice given by Melanie above, and like her have dealt with many Civil Servants in finding the right solution for them. If your relative is seriously considering an IVA have them look on IVA.com for reviews of Insolvency Practitioners to assist them in making an informed choice of who to contact, and try to get them to contact a few providers. That way they can take on board the advice available and this will assist them in making their decision. Please feel free to come forward with anyqueries they may have we are all here to help
