I owe about 32000 GBP to 3 credit cards and a personal bank loan. I currently live in the US - I moved here for work in October 2007. I am still a resident in the UK with my mother's house as my address. I am fully employed in the US but what's left of my savings in the UK will not be able to cover my debt for much longer. Am I able to obtain any debt relief? Currently I pay about 900 GBP a month and I am looking for a solution that could reduce that. Does living abroad pose a problem?

Hi
You could look at a debt solution whilst living abroad, no problem. Speak to several companies/experts as soon as possible

Thanks for reply. Have looked at several IVA consultants and they all say that I must be living and working in the UK. Can you recommend anyone that will consider helping me even though I live in te US?

Try
www.iva.com for reviews of iva companies. I am sure Melanie Giles or David Mond (ClearDebt) would be happy to help and they both come highly reccommended by the forum.

So long as you have lived in the UK at some time during the last three years an IVA is entirely possible. I am currently acting for a client in California and we are currently awaiting the outcome of the creditors meeting. Our work has all been done electronically, and even the monthly payment is worked out in dollars rather than sterling.

Melanie - you will have to find a reason to visit your client at the creditors' expense of course!!

What a great idea - I could do a round the world tour as I currently have clients in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, France and Belgium - together with a smatterin of HM Forces personnel in Afghanistan and Cyprus.
We also have our first clients from the Falkland Islands about to enter into an IVA as well!

How on earth do you cope?

As well as the list above, I can add that I personally have clients in Mexico, Spain, Germany and Greece amongst many others, so location need not in itself be a bar to obtaining an appropriate debt solution.
Regards.

Ooh yes - I missed out Spain but I have one or two out there as well!
It is easy to cope David - my office(s) are now entirely electronically driven - so no paper any more and I can therefore see my files from anywhere.
