i have had a default notice on my car an they want me to voluntary hand it back or they get a court order i have paid nearly half do i let them take me to court

If you have paid half I think you can hand it back and they can't take any further action apart from any arrears.

Not related but just a quickie Paul - are Rent officers (?) the people who set fair rents still in existence?

Are you thinking of a district valuer? If so I am fairly sure that they are.

Thanks - I'll come back to you if I get stuck - someone has a problem- private landlord increased her rent by70% - no agreement only an old fashioned type rent book.

Is your car financed on a hire purchase or conditional sale agreement, or was it purchased using an ordinary unsecured loan?

Handing the car back may also incur "make good costs" as well as the arrears.
