Hi
I was made bankrupt last week. Today I tried to open a basic account with Barclays and it declined. The C A B said they would allow me to but obvisousley not. Does anyone know where I can open a basic account. I need to do it quickley as my wages will go into my old account and be taken by the bank. Thanks

Hello lots of members here apply for a basic account with the Coop when you go into the Coop tell them your circumstances and they will only open you a basic account and not the full current account. Some staff dont try for the most basic account but go for the current, it could be Barclays tried for the full account! Good luck this forum is always here and will help you through this experience. Hi - like Kabby says try the Co-op, or the post office or even a pre-paid debit card account.

Good luck xx

If you cannot open anything else then get a prepaid card but make sure its one where your wages can be paid directly onto.

You should be able to get the co op account though.

How long till wages are due to go in?

We went to the Co-Op and have to say we should have done this years ago. It is a basic account and works well. I opened it over the phone and had no problems with it been approved.

I've got a Co-op Cashminder as well and I can't fault it. I've also got a pre BR full Nationwide account but I use the Cashminder as my main account as the Co-op customer service is so much better.

Have to say Skippy that I quite like NW customer service, always found them to be very friendly and helpful and quite quick at answering the phone.

They were ok until 2 declined payments (about £100!) were taken from my account and I was told that yes it happens and I'd just have to wait until it went back into the account in around 4 working days as there's nothing they can do about it!

It wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been at the weekend! Luckily Bank of Dave bailed me out!

For a guaranteed current account and prepaid card facility, try Secure Trust Bank. There is no credit checking, and the account can be opened within 24 hours. Unfortunately there is a £12.50 monthly charge.
