anyone have any personal recommendation re basic bank accounts? I need to open one so that I can have my salary paid into it as opposed to the one I currently use (which is overdrawn and will be subject to dmp or iva.)Can an application for even a basic account be refused if you have a poor credit history?

Co-op is an excellent one and recommended by posters on here.
For the basic cashminder you can either open it over the phone or in branch.

Manicmonday welcome.....Co-Op Cashminder or Co-Op Current Account (with chequebook) is my choice. IVA friendly too.

I think you will find that only the Cashminder account is IVA friendly.
Yorkshire Bank is another one who accept people with IVA's.

If your credit record is already bad you won't get a full current account from the Co-op - the only IVA or BR friendly account is the Cashminder.

My credit score was well below 100 and I still obtained their Privilage Account with all the bells and whistles......changed it a couple of days later to their current account without hassle.
Great service.

I am very surprised - they are not known for giving anything other than a Cashminder account to anyone in financial difficulties.

I think it may be because I have applied pre-IVA and before informing my creditors that I was going down the IVA route.

That's very unusual. Whilst they are very sympathetic to people who are BR or in an IVA or have a poor credit rating and give them the Cashminder (which is an excellent account) they are known for not offering full bank accounts.

I am surprised as well - even though you had not started the IVA procedure, your credit record was dreadful and we do have posters on here with better records than yours who have been refused a Co-op account.

Kallis I I spoke to the bank just 15 mins aqo and they asked me how much money I had going in at the end of the month. When I told her she asked if I wanted to upgrade to Current Account Plus which has an auto O/D facility....I declined obviously....for the Privilidge Account it actually went to their "Underwriting" dept before I was approved.

I am still very surprised.
I am not aware of any other posters on here who have had that offered to them when they have had financial problems.

I had a Natwest Step and just a couple of months ago they upgraded me to have a cheque book, but still only a Solo card, I'm sure if I'm a good girl in the future they'll offer me another card but for now I'm more than happy.

I am very suprised at this too. We opened a cashminder account and this week I was paying some money in when the cashier asked me if I wanted to upgrade the account as I met all the criterior. We are pre IVA as meeting not until 29th when I then told them we were in the process of an IVA they refused an upgrade on the account but were happy for us to have the cahminder account.
