Try getting a prepaid card such as Paypal. There are lots about and you will be able to use those to buy online.

You could also consider a Paypal account as some sites (Ebay for one) accept that.

Who do you bank with brian?
I'm with co-op and their basic account is a visa debit card so works fine on all online websites.

If it's a solo card then it's unlikely that you can use it online, but if you phone the company up then they will take it over the phone.

Worked for my daughter and they matched the internet price.

I use my Solo card in most places apart from petrol stations where you pay at the pump. Luckily they've upgraded hubby's card but not mine??? so if that's the case he pays x

If it's a visa electron sometimes just selecting visa (instead of visa election) will work, even if they don't advertise the electron card as a method of payment.

How long you been in your IVA for Brian? It's just that HSBC are known to close accounts of people in an IVA so it might be best to switch to a more IVA friendly bank. x

I have a full Smile account which was opened during my IVA process but prefer to use the Step Account with a solo card. The Full account I keep as if I need to write a cheque I've got the option and can just transfer the money over. x

I have had a cashplus card since late 2005 (I think) and it works perfectly for me.

I am expecting a Nationwide Cashcard+, but I hope that they will upgrade it to a full debit card before too long.
