I'm 2 years into my IVA and my car is dying on me so my mum has offered to buy me a new car. It's not a new car but a used car and she doesn't know about my IVA but she does know i'm paying my debts which is why she's offered to buy the car for me. Is this something I should be declaring or do the IVA not care as it's my mum buying it does anyone know please?

Hi and welcome. If your mum is paying for the car there won't be a problem. You can keep you IP in the loop and just inform them of what has happened.

This may sound pedantic but bear with me! Your mum can give you a car BUT she cannot give you the money to buy a car. A cash gift would be classed as a windfall, whereas a car isn't a windfall. Happy car shopping x

But what if the OP's mother gave the cash on condition it was only available to buy a car?

Hi foster,

That's really nice of your mum. You should let your IP know just in case they are under the impression that your old car has any value, but otherwise there shouldn't be an issue.

* Idiot's question *

How would this work out with the owners' name on the V5 certificate? Would it be a transfer of ownership after the car was bought?

Don"t forget that the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. I am sure that foster could have his name on there. We have a motability car which does not belong to us but it has.hubbys name on the registration document.

Hi Everyone and thanks for your feedback, most helpful as always :)
I have just phoned my IVA company, (Debt Free Direct), and they asked me how much the car would be that my mum was buying and I told them around &7000 but no more and they told me it was no problem if my mum was buying it. i will keep a proof of purchase just in case to show that my mum paid
