my father who is self employed is considering a iva. due to the nature of his work (builder) income varies and so does outgoings, (fuel, accomadation etc). is a iva possible for someone who is self employed with funds that differ each week/month?

It certainly is possible - a good starting point will be to research a few IP's that can offer you some help - look at the comparison site www.iva.com - it will give you links to companies that can offer advice and some particularly deal in self employed people. Good luck !

Hi Simon. IVA's were originally designed for business and self employed. Yes, it is possible. However, make sure you chat to an IP that is conversant with the needs of the self employed. Your father will also have to have a face to face meeting with the IP.

Have a look at www.iva.com where there is a list of reputable companies, with reviews. Chat to a few and see how you get on. The advice is free and without obligation.

I am currently acting for a lot of clients in the building trade, and it doesn't matter that the income fluctuates - in reality most self-employed people's income fluctuates (including Insolvency Practitioners!) and we have to make sure that the IVA proposal is flexible enough to cover this.

So long as your Dad has a solid and established business, and IVA could well be a perfect solution for him, but professional advice at an early stage is essential so that he can understand all of the debt solutions available to him and make the right choice for his future.

Good luck in your search.
