Hi everyone,

I need a new computer pronto- I use a laptop at home for work. My personal laptop has broken, I can't afford to replace it and work will not buy one for me. I also use the laptop for personal reasons, such as communication and keeping track of my IVA budget. How can I get a computer if I have no IVA budget to cover it?! Any ideas about what I can do?

Do you have any cash at all to buy a second hand one? Some of the Buy it sell it sites via FB or similar often have these for sale.

Are there any work schemes available to help with the purchase?

No work schemes at all unfortunately :(

Second hand computer?! Hmm only if in seriously good condition- I would prefer to make an investment on a new one and then it would last longer.

Plus you don't know what information is stored on a second hand one or if someone could be remotely taking details.

I would consider refurbished...but how to get the money together...

birthday coming up? Just scrimping and saving from allowances I guess but that will all take a while I realise and doesn't help you out now.

I've a real old machine with Vista which I keep as a back up and let my granddaughter use whem she's here but I know I wouldn't want to use it all the time.

How can your work expect you to use your own laptop with no provision for replacements in case's of emergency?
You could approach your IP and ask for a payment break, the worst that can happen is they say "no".

I agree that a missed payment may be the best way forward and add it on to the end if you have not made it up. One missed payment is nothing to be concerned about but ask your IP first.

Good solutions from Michael and Merlin, although Lesleys "old fashioned" method of "scrimping & saving", although not ideal in this scenario, would be my preffered choice, either that or take it for a repair.

You can always try http://www.schtrade.co.uk/ I've had refurbished laptops from them for work in the past, and they've been extremely good quality.

Some of the laptops advertised on that site you posted PaulyB are more expensive than what you can get new from eBuyer!
