when applying to go bankrupt would you say sky television is a luxury

Some of our posters have been through bankruptcy and I'm sure will be able to comment. I don't consider a basic package to be a luxury myself. Skippy's blog is very informative. x

Depends if you are paying for Movies, Sports etc. Those would likely be classed as luxury but not the basic package since everyone has to have digital reception by some means now or very soon.

If you have sky broadband and phone you could try to argue the case that by removing the premium packages (assuming that is the question and not just having sky) the others will go up since that's the way skys pricing works. Not sure how good that argument would be though.

For once and this won't happen often, I'd side with the creditors and send you to the freeview dungeon!

There is also the question as to whether you are still under contract or not.

A basic Sky TV package ought to be acceptable to most Official Recievers.

If you are under contract I can hardly see how they could argue against it.
I don't see how a basic package is a luxury, obviously the premium channels or packages are a different matter!

Personally I would say it is a luxury when you could have a Freeview box. However as Mel says it should be acceptable to the OR.

If it was disallowed and you are under contract then it would be cancelled and the money owed would become part of the bankruptcy.

I do not think a basic package is a luxury because all you get on the ordinary channels are rubbish soap operas and Jeremy Kyle!

My wife and I never watch ITV and other than Masterchef, Match of the Day and the News we rarely watch BBC. Without Sky we would be lost and might even have to talk to each other at night!

Not at all Melanie. Plenty of football mixed with CSIs, Law&Order, Madmen, Boardwalk Empire and such. The X Factor seems like it is fixed and I have no interest in hasbeen celebrities or politicians prancing round a stage. It conjures up worse visions than me in green tights!

I think there are some who may argue that a basic package is a luxury as the £21 or so is needed by some families towards groceries etc but where a budget can allow it then it seems most ORs will accept it. I personally only have freeview but then I don't watch much TV - Downton is all I need at the moment!!

I would side with a basic package is not a luxury. If you don't have a digital aerial you may find it hard to get freeview to work. I bought an expensive indoor aerial and can't get anything due to being in a remote area.

I only have the basic package and to be fair even when out the IVA I'm not getting anything else. x

Hi, I think the point to argue will be that if you are forced to end the contract with Sky early (I believe you have to sign up for a certain period but I may be incorrect) this will amount to breach of contract and Sky can pursue this. ORs do know this and when I worked as a senior examiner for the OR we would allow Sky if it was within the ordinary monthly expenditure and to prevent a breach situation. Hope this helps Sam
