Just thought I`d let anyone banking online with HSBC using the secure key know about this malware that tries to get you to transfer money from your account to their`s, my partner nearly fell victim to it.

When she was logging into her account via the HSBC site and after she had entered her login details and secure key code, a pop up appeared advising that due to some possible abnormal activity on her account her secure key needed re-calibrating.
On screen instructions prompted her to enter numbers using her secure key and screen.

The screen then appeared to be buffering, I then noticed what was happening and told her to shut down the laptop.

We immediately contacted HSBC and what was actually happening was the fraudster was attempting to get my partner to transfer money from her account to their`s, and it`s only down to the fact that there was not enough in her account to cover the transfer that they weren`t successful.

We were told by the bank`s fraud department that this malware evades most antivirus software, and on carrying out searches about it learned this to be correct, and were instructed to download `Trusteer Rapport` to run alongside our installed antivirus program.

I did two full computer scans via my paid for antivirus program and they found nothing, after I installed Trusteer Rapport it immediately found and removed `Shylock`.

Please be careful when banking online.

Thanks for the info. Goosed.

I've stopped using paid for security applications and use Microsoft Security Essentials. I'd been using Kaspersky and before that F-secure. Both came free with online banking.

On installing MSE, it picked up a variety of trojans and even a keyboard logger!!!!

If you don't have Trusteer Rapport already installed on your PC, you should get prompted to download and install it when you go onto the HSBC site. My wife uses HSBC and I use the Co-Op and both did this.

Draw back with it though - it cant cope with some browser add ons - and the computer will slow down or freeze frequently

Can you turn it on and off as needed i.e when doing banking?

I don't think you can turn it off - as its suppose to run in the back ground all the time - i ended up uninstalling it and, as soon i did this computer functioned as normal. It seem to be a well known problem - but they still haven't ironed it out

I installed it myself and made my computer lag. This was ages ago was under the I,mores soon you could turn it on/off was most probably mistaken

I too have online banking with HSBC and Snatander - both want you to download Trusteer.

I did it previously, and it stuffed my computer up to the extent that I had to reinstall Windows. (My computer is only 15 Months old, and a reasonably good spec. So if it messes that up, it's likely to really slow-up/crash an older machine).

Personally, I have not brought anti-virus software for a few years. I run the free 'Microsoft Security Essentials' anti-virus/firewall program. Seems to work very well. No need for any more protection as far as I'm concerned at this point, providing you keep everything up to date.

I have Trusteer Rapport installed on both a Windows 7 PC at work and a Windows XP PC at home, no problems on either PC.

Once installed, there are options on the Start Menu to Stop and Start the program.

great post

Im with Nationwide and when they started to recomemnd Trusteer a few years ago i downloaded immediatley.

im not techy at all , but can honeslty say its not affected my pc

as there are often posts on the web re fraudulent internet banking scams , I must say ive tried to stop using the random numbers requested from my internet banking password and try and use the little Nationwide gadget that looks like a calculator , that you put your card in and it generates a pin. ( sorry for the poor description , as really dont know what these gadgets are known as )
