Hi there, I went to take out a new contract today with Tesco and I got declined. I have had a contract since I was 18 and never been declined. Is it because I am on an IVA that I was declined? I have never ever defaulted on my mobile contracts or my mortgage. The issue I had was with credit cards and loans. Any advice would be useful.Thanks.

Hi Chantal - welcome.

Were you trying to change your phone supplier? It could be that Tesco Mobile do a strenuous credit check.

I believe some of our posters on here have changed contracts to T-mobile whilst in an IVA.

I stuck with the same mobile provider whilst in an IVA as I couldn't take rejection!!

A lot will depend on the phone you want, some phones are over £500, which is obviously much higher risk to the network than a £50/100 phone

Have you asked them what the problem is Chantal? They ought to be able to give you some guidance as to what is stopping you taking out a new contract.

Look at your credit file for starters as Tesco would gave done.See if there is anything negative other than the iva?

Should ideally not change mobile providers during an iva as a full credit check will be made.Upgrades are OK

Chantal,

Your best bet is to stick with your existing phone provider.

T-Mobile declined me, but have accepted others.

There is a new network provider: 'shebang' (google it), who promise mobile phone contracts with 'No Credit Check', and option to upgrade to the latest handsets after 6-Months.

They seem legitimate, and share T-Mobile's infrastructure, so coverage should not be a problem.

Worth checking out if any IVA customers need a new mobile contract.

The only catch (there had to be one), but as you would perhaps expect, is that comparable contracts for 'normal' customers with a reasonable credit rating are slightly cheaper.

Anyway, it's an option that may just make IVA life a little easier for some of us.

In my experience all they'll tell you is that your credit score is too low.

I was originally turned down for a sim only (was pay as you go before), which is almost no risk to the network.

If you want to switch suppliers I'd go sim only first(with old or cheap phone purchased outright) then upgrade to a handset after 6 months or so, as this will give the network confidence that you pay your bills.
