My husband and I are currently in an IVA with Grant Thornton. I have just accepted a new job as a full time community nurse (previous to this I was part time). As part of the role I am required to have a reliable car, plus I am a professional so it needs to look reasonable as I am to visit patient homes, care homes etc. The car I currently have is an old Vauxhall Agila - it was quite reliable but more recently (the past year) we have had to pay out more and more for it, plus it is not particularly professional looking to pull up to a patients house etc in this type of car. We are 18 months into our IVA and would like to know whether Grant Thornton would approve to me applying for a long term lease on a car for the reasons above? I realise that my wages will increase slightly so may have to increase the IVA too. This new role will also benefit me in that I have an excellent chance of progression, which also = more money in the future. Many thanks in advance.

They seem to be rejecting loans but if you make use of the NHS salary sacrifice scheme I fail to see how they can say no.

You bring community I understand why a reliable car is needed.

Thank you for your reply, I was thinking of taking advantage of the salary sacrifice but apparently it is under review with the trust I will be working for.

Hi. I am with grant Thornton and nearly completed 5 years of my IVA and my car is 13 years old and I too work for the NHS and paid more than a £1,000 in car repairs in the last year and they won't let me get a lease car through work despite being contracted to use my car for nhs business and should my car eventually be scrapped I would lose my job!

Hi Michelle, I spoke to Grant Thornton yesterday and they said that if I could tell them where the additional money would come from to pay for the car they would usually agree to that but I need to prove it. I am going from a part time job to full time so would have extra income, they seemed to be happy with that. If I were to not have any extra income then it would be a no. Apparently an incentive for my creditors is that my IVA payments will also increase. They may well not agree to it once I have gathered all the information they have asked for.

NHS salary sacrifice scheme usually works out at cost neutral.

You need to do the maths and prove it.

Also the scheme is not based on finance or credit so no interest.

Whoop whoop aperture have agreed an NHS lease car due to the cost of running and repairing my current car and because my fixed rate mortgage has come down and I can still afford my IVA payment as it is. Very happy. Thankyou for all your help, though I have to say getting a final answer was pain staking until I found a sympathetic customer service advisor
