Hi I'm looking at applying for a job with National Grid as an engineer. I have heard a lot of stories of people not getting jobs because of having an IVA. Does anyone know if this would affect my chances?

It shouldn't but it will depend on the contract terms etc.

Hi Darren - I can't answer specifically about that particular job - it depends on what the contract says, as LNE has stated.

It would be unusual though and unless they ask you, you don't have to tell them about your IVA.

Based on something today - National Grid may do credit checks linked to employment.

but does that warrant exclusion from the job?

Banks aren't 100% keen on hiring ppl with poor credit, likewise security clearances require extra work (and pretty much forget about DV).

Some places contractual agreements with their clients may also have clauses regarding workers having poor credit.

But this isn't a bank, it's as an engineer.

Hi there,

My dad worked for National Grid and after speaking to him it is apparently depending on the type of engineering role you have applied for, they may credit check you.
This is because you will possibly be in a position where you could have people arrange additional work through you and under the bribery act, could offer back handers etc- crazy I know, but has happened before apparently over the years.

Hopefully the recruitment team will come back to you and if they do need to, they will onto do a basic search - similar to what I have had from time to time when taking on contracts- and it doesn't show on those.

Fingers crossed they don't need to!

The bottom line is, if they ask the question, be honest. There is a chance that they already know the answer and your response is a mark of your integrity.

As far as I was always aware some firms like you to confirm that information in case other employees find out and try to blackmail/bully.

I still don't see how an IVA would prevent someone from being an Engineer though.
