My IVA was sold to me by Harrington brooks, who told me that it is different to bankruptcy and won't affect anything accept my ability to gain credit.

I took out an insurance policy about 32 days ago but wasn't asked about an IVA. I just had It cancelled because of the IVA and wanted to enquire if this is normal.

No, this isn't normal, but some companies do decline insurance for those in an IVA and some load the premium for some reason. However, most are OK.

Which insurance company were you with ?

Hi and welcome. As Foggy says, it's not usual, however, can happen.

There are companies out there for those of us within an IVA.

Hi and welcome from me as well.

There are companies out there that will accept you and I'm surprised that someone has cancelled your policy.

Which insurance company was it with?

The broker was Lancaster Insurance. The insurer was Zenith. Throughout the application process, I was not asked on any occasion about CCJ's, Bankruptcy or anything to that effect. After paying the deposit and providing documents they requested, then paying the first months premium, they emailed out of the blue asking me to call them. I was then told that they could no longer insure me as they had done checks (32 days after inception) and was advised this was with immediate affect. To rub salt in the wound, I was then told I owed them almost £200!!

What did the £200 relate to? The initial cover provided or some kind of cancellation fee?

£200 was the total amount owed for the number of days on cover with cancellation fees. This is after paying the deposit plus the first month. The policy total price with legal protection and breakdown cover amounted to £330. They wouldn't accept an offer to pay in full. I would think that would rid them of any risk regards payments.

That is really bad of them - I hope you have managed to source something else.

Shouldn't be cancellation fees as they are the ones who did it!

I argued the fact of the cancellation fees! The next "cheapest" policy is £795!!

Are you using comparison sites ? Some insurers do not quote on them or load the premium -- it is always best to go direct.

Agree with Foggy - you should try direct.

I always check the comparison sites first then ring the top result direct. They always ask for additional info. As I mentioned previously, they asked nothing about CCJ's, bankruptcy or IVA's. They told me they would check my credit file as part of the application and approved it there and then.

Can anyone recommend an insurer who does frown upon IVA's? I'm pretty disappointed with the company that set up my IVA as they assured me that nothing like this would happen.

I was insured through Direct Line all through my IVA -- but was with them before the IVA began.

No blame can be placed on your IVA provider -- they cannot be held responsible for a short sighted, discriminatory, internal policy of individual companies.

I had car insurance with one call for 5.5 years whilst in IVA with no problems
