Hiya Peter and welcome to the forum. As far as I'm aware the bailiffs cannot take anything that does not belong to your son. You may have to provide receipts if they question ownership.

Further to what Chris has said, if the baliffs have gone through the correct process and have a warrant to enter the property then they will make a list first of all of the things they intend to take.

This list will be given to your son and yes then anything that is not his property cant be taken - but you may need to proof ownership.

They will give you (I think) 21 days to pay or they will return to take goods.

Has your son taken any advice about his debt problem ?

And yet further to the above they will add considerable fees and costs to the debt.

You would be much better dealing with this debt before they turn up. My congestion charge went from £160 to $420 just because i faffed about for a week .

Peter,

Firstly make sure it is not a bluff. Plenty of creditors threaten bailiffs without being anywhere near this.

Unless your son has not paid some sort of statutory debt like Johnny's Congestion Charges above (other usual one would be parking fines) or has defaulted against a CCJ (County Court Judgement) then it might be a bluff.

Also unless somethings changed, I don't think Bailiffs have any automatic right (in the first instance) to enter property unless you let them in (or leave a window open). However they can nab your sons car if it's parked outside.

If you were able to find out what the debt was about you would be a lot nearer to sorting it out.

Best Regards
