Hi all, I just wanted to say that I might not be around as much for a while as I don't know if I'll be able to get on at work. We have an issue that means my job might be in danger. I found out on my birthday - not the greatest present! They haven't said that jobs could be affected, but it doesn't take a genius to work it out!

So sorry Skip I hope you get an answer one way or the other, nothing worse than worndering is there and low moral at work is a nightmare.

These things are sent to try us, its always better to jump before you get pushed, that way you get a better landing.

Oh skippy that's awful news. Life has a way of knocking us down, the knack is to keep getting back up... fingers crossed everything will be ok. Hope Harry's settling in ok, xx

as you have such a great network here it would help us all to know which area you are in and what type of work you do.

You never know who knows someone who knows someone else etc.

This is the 6 degrees of separation theory - which generally works.

You have obviously made some friends on the site and had a huge impact on people over time. It is only polite to let them have the opportunity to help you back if they can

What's this Paul? ... should I vaguely remember teaching this to my psychology students at some time? ... it rings a bell ... something about a chap that sent a letter to a complete stranger and it came back to him via six steps? Or am I just making that up (she says scurrying away to her texts books which, of course, she should know off by heart as she is supposed to be teaching them!)

The theory is that if one person is one step away from each person they know, and two steps away from each person those people know, that everyone is a mere 6 steps away from everybody on the planet.

It does take some deep thought to related to this theory, and I wonder if anyone has tested it to see if it works!

Is it the same thing as the saying 'it's a small world' then?

Hi Soulgrowth - you are absolutely correct.

A midwest professor did an experiemnt to send parcels to a lawyer in eastern US. he chose 100 people at random from the telephone book and asked them to send the parcel but they couldn't post it directly to the lawyer.

They had to give it to someone they new and so on.

The majority of parcels ( 96% I think) arrived with the lawyer within 6 steps, and the majority were delivered by by 3 people for the final step.

Thus 6 degrees of separation.

There is a similar case study with Hush Puppy shoes but that is for another post.

Think of a movie star, a footballer and a politician and lets see how many steps it takes us to get there.

Hopefully this will give skippy some hope re us helping her!

I was in the same situation as you once and knew it was only a matter of time before I was let go, so I went out and got another job asap. I had not worked there that long so did not miss out on any massive redundancy payment or anything.
Its always a horrible time as, as Lily says, moral will be low and your collegues as worried as you are.
I hope it works out ok.

Thanks guys! Hopefully it won't come to me losing my job, but it made me realise how fragile things actually are. I'm in administration / customer services, so even if the worst does happen I should be ok getting another job. I'm going to hang in there and see what happens - I love the people I work with and we're a good team so I'll stick with it. Also I've been there 6 years, so I'd get some redundancy, although I know it wouldn't be much.

BTW Paul, I'm actually a lady Skippy!
