My daughter is thinking about joining the police when she leaves school. If we enter into an IVA will this affect her prospects?
She is only in Year 8, but if IVA accepted she will be 19 when finished... I know they check family history etc

Hi Ang
I can't see why this would affect her, even the police can have IVA's. They just can't go BR. She should be perfectly ok.

Why can't police officers declare bankruptcy? My son has shown an interest in joining the police and now I'm a bit concerned. If he does surely they can't penalise him for our br? I know they do family checks, but I thought that was just for criminal offences and charges....

i wasn't sure, but when you think our financial situations got nothing to do with our kids. think it may be just for to see if we're drug barons!!

Chris.g,
This is from a Police website, it does not mention anything about family members though.
Financial status:
Applicants will have their financial status checked.
These checks are carried out because police officers have access to privileged information, which may make them vulnerable to corruption.
Applicants with outstanding County Court judgements, who have been registered bankrupt with outstanding debts, will be rejected. If you have discharged bankruptcy debts then you will need to provide a Certificate of Satisfaction with your application.
Thanks,
sblack

If common sense prevails then surely the children can't be penalised for having parents who are/or have been in an iva or bankrupt[?]
I am sure an expert will confirm soon, but seems unlikely to affect children to me[:)]

It would be very unfair if the actions of the parent affected the children, but I do not know for sure.
You can't help but worry about every eventuality though.....
Hope all is going well with your proposal Angela and I am sure you are well on your way to a great outcome

sblack thanks for that. I didn't know that was the case. [:0]
To be fair, I think anyone who has gone through the distress that IVA/BR causes will be LESS likely to be open to corruption!
Another question, if you have been discharged could your app be unfairly rejected through this, even though they wouldn't admit it? [:(]

hi [8D] I work for the Police ... eek .. Im a systems (IT) administrator which means I have a highish security clearance - I was BR and am now discharged - Im a civilian and discussed it my HR folk before going BR. No Problems !
Just for info - every force has different rules but generally
1) They are not interested if someone in the family is BR - they are looking for criminal activity / terrorists etc more than debts.
2) If you are going to join as a copper then you need to be discharged, and show that youre being responsible.
3) I know of several serving coppers that have been BR .. and one that is still BR .. if no fraud was involved and no BRO (bankruptcy restriction order ) then most forces are ok about it.
4) Some forces only do a criminal check - they are meant to do a financial check from April this year but not all have it in place yet !
Hope this helps
