Three guys go to a hotel. They tell the man behind the desk that they want 3 rooms. He says, £10 per room so that''s £10. So they pay and go up to their rooms.
Then, the deskman remembers that there is a special for 3 rooms for £25. He gives the bellhop the £5 change and tells him to take it up to them.
On the way, the bellhop realizes that he doesn''t know how to split it 3 ways so he keeps £2 and gives £1 to each man.
My question is: If after the £1 refund each man paid £9 and £9 x 3 men equals £27 and the bellhop only has £2, then what happened to the other £1?

So
The hotel got £30 and gave the bell boy £5
So the hotel now have £25
The bell boy has £5 to spilt and give 3 men
He gives them £1 each a total of £3
He keeps £2
so
Hotel has £25
Bellhop has £2
-------------
total £27
each man spent £9 9*3 = £27
The world is in balance
This is a classic misdirection technique
Good tho aint it

Gavin is a naughty boy ! Posting a classic maths puzzle on a debt website .. shame on you ... made me chuckle tho' [8D]
Skippy - its a mind game --
another way
The hotel have £30 , they give the bell boy £5 to refund to the customer, so the hotel now have £25 .
The bell boy takes his £5 and keeps £2 , gives £3 to the customers
Hotel has £25 , bell boy has £2 , total £27
Customers had paid £30 but got £3 refund , total £27
The bottom line is the hotel have £25
refunded £5
the customers have £3 of the refund
the bell boy has £2 of the refund
There is no missing £1
The flim-flam is telling you that the customer has paid £27
That the bell boy has £2
which is £29
your mind then goes bonkers and tries to bring the £30 into it ..
The reality is
the Customers have nothing - just a room
the hotel have £25
the bell boy has £2
total cash = £27
The customers paid £9 each - which equal £27
It really is good ..
Mish - yes I am scottish and ye know what they say .. [}:)]

The £9 x 3 is a red herring.
The customers have only paid £8-33 each to the hotel itself as £5 of the original £30 was given to the bellboy by the manager - leaving £25 with the hotel. (£25 divided by 3 = £8-333 each).
The bellboy gave £1 back to each customer and kept £2 (total £5).
£25 + £5 = £30.

Arrrghhhhhhh
Customers give hotel £30
Hotel keeps £25 and gives Bell boy £5
Bell boy keeps £2 and gives customers £3.. total £5
Hotel has £25
Bell boy has £2
Customers have £3
Add that up comes to £30
If you said that the hotel has £25 and the bell boy has £2, and the customers have £3 you would go yep thats right, that comes to £30
The con is telling you that the customers paid £27 and that the bell boy has £2 - its a mind screw - you immediately add £27 and £2 get £29 and say where did the £1 go..
If you said that the hotel has £25 and the bell boy has £2 and the customers have a room which cost £30 but the customers got £3 back , you would go thats right they paid £27 .
You have to bring the hotel into the equation otherwise its a nonsense.
Gavin .. is evil [:D]
