I am in a lot of debt and have been provisionally advised that an IVA is the best option by Moneyexpert.com.
does anyone know if this is a reputable company or could anyone recommend another?

Hi Sandra and welcome.

I have been told by the person I spoke to yesterday (the first time I had spoke to them) he advised that it might be the best option.
They have also asked me to give them a cheque (£250)paid payable to myself to show my creditors I am willing to pay. Is this normal practice?

Hi Sandra

I would not send a cheque to someone you have merely spoken to over the phone. At this point you do not appear to have been properly assessed as to whether an IVA is the right thing for you. You shouldn't make any payment to anyone until they have done the proper due diligence has been done on your finances, and then made a formal and proper recommendation to you.

I would echo that sentiment entirely, at the very least you should wait to see things in black and white before coming to any decision for yourself.
I would also encourage you to talk to2 or 3 different companies to get a balanced view of all your options. You may wish to visit www.iva.com to have a scout round and read some reviews for yourself.

Hi Sandra

I think the £250 cheque is more likely for showing your goodwill to Moneyexpert.com. I doubt your creditors will see a bean of it. Short answer - go elsewhere.

Sandra ... I have very much learnt to go with my intuition in dealing with my own journey of addresing my debt problems ... if it doesn't 'feel' right it probably isn't.

You could do a lot worse than to ring Melanie's team ... Melanie Giles is one of our experts here and does a heck of a lot for a lot of people ... and she is very 'real'.

Good luck and please stay in touch and let us know how you get on.

With best wishes

Debbie
