I have had a letter from a debt collection agency for £7900 from the csa for maintenance arrears to be paid within 7 days from the date of the letter (19th june) has any one have any advice to give me? would a interim order stop it?. I have spoke to the csa & they will not agree to any thing only if i pay the amount in full this came out of the blue with no warning even though i am now paying maintenance.

Hey Shaun, you might need legal advice on this one, I'm not sure if anyone on here will be able to advise you. Hang in there for an expert anyway, Viki

How odd.
Usually they just add an extra £10 or so for the arrears onto your maintenance that you are paying

I would have a word with your local CAB and see if they can negotiate this for you.

CSA arrears cannot be included in either an IVA or bankruptcy proceedings. You will need to come to some form of payment arrangement with the CSA, and firstly understand why you have arrears in the first place. Things like this should not turn up out of the blue.

Believe me they do Melanie. When I had my dealings with the CSA they took so long to process the claim that they backdated the amount even though I was paying direct to my ex and I had no clue they would do this. The amount like the poster has put was ridiculous. They are vultures!!!

What happened in your case Ray. Did you come to an ongoing payment arrangement with the CSA?

Unfortunately not. I had to pay the full amount which was near £2500.00. Luckily my Parents helped me out on that occasion. However I will stress I full under the old CSA rules system so it may be different with the new rules.

I understand what you are saying about coming to a arrangement with them about payment. I done this in january this year I am paying £11 a week maintenance & £40 a week arrears but when i phoned the CSA they said what i was paying was the new system (CS2)& the letter from the debt collection agency was for the arrears from the old system (CS1)& they wanted full payment to clear the debt. The only payment plan they would accept would me to pay 40% of the balance (£3100) & then rougley £75 a week plus the £51 a week i am all ready paying i earn £300 a week & am going through a IVA as i speak, what am i meant to do?

They make me laugh. Where do they expect you to find this money??? The sooner they are abolished the better. They take very little of what you have to pay out in to account

It's a bit like the awful tax credits system ... "you owe ...think of a number x it by a 1000 and double it".

Shaun, good luck, I hope you can find a solution.
