Hi folks. Thought we were going to lose our old companion(14 year old heinz 57 crossbreed) today as he seemed to be staggering uncontrollably,and drooling. Wife took him to the vets to be told that he has had a stroke. We have him at home as there was little they could do at the vets(and an overnight stay would just add to his stress). He is now on tablets to thin blood and stop blockages and managed to go for a little tinkle tonight so heres hoping he makes a decent recovery.
Anyone ever had a problem like this with there dogs???

As an enormous dog lover, I cannot offer any veterinary advice, but just to say that I am so sorry to hear about your little one. I have a 14 yeare old Yorkie who rules the roost in my house, and at that age it is hard to remember that they are really living on borrowed time. Make sure you sleep close to him tonight as he might need some support through the night, and I truly hope he will make a full recovery.

So sorry to hear this, I didnt know this happened to dogs. I will find out for you tomorrow though.

Well thats me up after an uneventful night sleeping on the sofa to keep an eye on the poorly hound. Seems to be standing a bit better this morning and wagging his tail. The wifes is off work for 2 days now so he wont be left without anyone keeping an ey on him(other than our 4 year old choccy lab!!!)

My mum's last dog had a couple of strokes when she was getting older. She made a pretty good recovery from each one and lived until she was 18 bless her.

Paul, sorry to hear about your dog. It's awful when they get old and things start happening.

We have a 14 year old lurcher who keeps plodding on although she is very slow now.

I know she is living on borrowed time and I keep looking at her and wondering how long she will be with us for.

Fingers crossed that she makes a full recovery.

sorry to hear that.we had two old english sheepdogs who were the world to me.lost them three years ago.just make the most with your dog.give loads of love and cuddles

how is he today?

He is able to get himself up and walk about,still leaning to one side and fairly unsteady. Not eating much at all,drinking ok,and has been out for a tinkle. He is booked to go see the vet again tonight so I will let everyone know whats happening later.

He's probably wondering what is happening to him! It's a good sign that he is drinking though, and able to get about after a fashion.

Hi folks, well the dog is spending the night at the vets,as he is dehydrated so they have put him on a drip for the night.
They think he has some sort of vestibular problem,which affects balance etc and can very often look similar to a stroke. This could be good news or bad news as the causes range from tumours to inner ear infections so we wont know what the likely recovery is until they work out whats causing the problems. Poor little soul didnt even bark at the cat in the vets reception area(not like him at all).

Phoning vets in the morning so fingers crossed the dog has a good night.

Just back from the vets. Took in a tin of dogs own food and he managed to eat a quarter of it,his balance is getting better and he looks much brighter. Not counting any chickens yet,but the outlook is a bit brighter than it was.
