How do I go about about a new bank account as my current bank has closed my account due to being overdrawn as I named them on my IVA proposal? I have tried Nat West and they rejected me, do I go to a new bank telling them my situation? Are there any Banks you can reccommend to try? Thanks

Hi aidan-g and welcome,

You could try Abbey - cash card
Barclays - cash card
Nationwide - Flex Account
Halifax

Good luck,

Apparently co-op are quite good too. Ensure whatever you go for, that you apply for a basic (not current) account. Most basic accounts give a cash card and online management of the account, and do allow standing orders, direct debits and cash transfers.

Pick a bank whom is not one of your creditors from the list above and make an appointment to open an account in person at your local branch.

hello aidan-g, you could also try Thinkbanking , but they do charge a monthly fee of £12.50. Here is the link for further information.

To my knowledge you are allowed a debit card as this comes directly out of your account... at least i hope so as i have one :-)

thinkbanking has a debit card as you say but it will only give what you have , be careful that the nationwide does not let you go overdrawn as this could be classed as credit. You could always check with them.

You are allowed to keep a debit card and will be very useful later so please don't return it!

Simon

The thing is that you have opened an account that is clean and therefore as longing as you don't go overdrawn there will be no reason why Nationwide should withdraw it.

I know it is strange but there you go!

Well Done Sir!

You might as well look at a few other accounts for a second line of defence as well!

Co Op is very good as well but they do not have many branches.

If you want a Mastercard which is front loaded as well as a credit card then look at Cash Plus. It costs only £4.95 but is good value!

Their web site is :- http://www.mycasplus.co.uk

Have a look at it!

I agree with Ray - as long as you dont owe debts to the said bank, and that you dont have an overdraft, you should be ok. The key is to open such an account before your credit history is pooped, and make sure the bank is not one of, or related to, your creditors.

Having said that, I believe HSBC and First Direct have closed accounts of people doing IVA's recently. So maybe get a basic account as a backup measure just incase, as you dont have to use them or pay anything into them.

Lloyds TSB have let me keep my account open, albeit with their rubbish cashcard that can only be used in a Lloyds cashpoint. I've also got an account with Nationwide with a cash card, but I need to sort out my direct debits first. I also had a few problems opening that so I'm a bit wary about using it at the moment. I suppose having to walk to Lloyds gives me exercise and makes me think if I want to spend anything!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Hi

I have a CO Op cashminder account and it works just great for me. Only difference to a standard current account is, that there is no cheque book or debit card, and OD. More and more places are starting to accept Elektron. But besides it is easy to withdraw cash from any cash point (Link) free of charge.
I bank on line, set up Standing orders and Direct debits and money transfers if required.
Another thing I like is that if I take money from a cash point I can see it has been debited from my online account straightaway. That never used to happen with my NatWest account.

PS its free there is no monthly fee..........
