Hi everyone

I have a bank account question its probably been asked a million times but I cant seem to locate it now im looking. The question is I have opened a basic account with Natwest as I dont owe them any money and it has online banking I am really happy with it so far however I owe money to Direct line who are part of the RBS just the same as Natwest (why do you only find this out too late!) so will they close the account and take the few pounds I have or will I be ok since its with another part of the company and just a basic account? If so what othwer bank offeres internet banking and a solo card or the like?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I do not know the answer to the direct line thing, sorry, you may be fine though.

Co op offer a cashminder with visa electron, internet banking and you can withdraw from any link machine. I am really happy with it.

I've got the same account as Lily and I'm really happy with it as well.

I have a feeling that someone said the other day that NatWest were also closing customer accounts who were in IVAs, so I would check to see whether they have this global policy, and if so move your account now.

There seems to be some confusion about this - someone had their account closed, but another forum member phoned Natwest and they said they aren't closing them. I think if I had a Natwest account I'd open a new account with one of the 'safe' banks just to make sure I was OK.

As banks seem to be changing their policies on who can and who can't have a bank account it's probably good to have a second basic account as a backup just in case. If you do suddenly get the "we're closing your account in 30 days" letter then at least you already have a backup account in place. I have a second basic account just in case
