Hi
I wonder if you could help me. My husband and I are considering applying for an IVA to sort out our debt problems but our main concern is that we both work in the public sector and we are worried that this will affect our jobs. I know that we are not obliged to tell our employer about the IVA but if they find out through other means we are worried that we may lose our jobs.
Please help!

Hi Sarah and welcome to the forum

I am sure that doing an IVA will not affect your jobs, and there would be no reason for your employer to find out. Perhaps you would be better off having an anonymous chat with your HR department, in order to resolve this issue in your own minds.

Hi
Check the T+C of your employment.
If there is no reference to insolvency then you are ok.
There is no reason for an employer to know that you are in an IVA and ,unless they suspect something and look through the Insolvency Register,no way that they could find out.

Welcome Sarah,

As others have mentioned I would firstly look through your terms and conditions of employment, and then if you are still not sure speak with your HR department.

My wife and I work in the public sector in positions of trust and have just entered into an iva. Like you we were worried about it affecting our job. On the one hand I thought it maybe best to keep quiet and they would not find out. On the other I thought..be honest and up front about it as it would then look like I was not trying to hide it and that spoke volumes about my integrity.
i took the bull by the horns and asked for an interview with my HR manager and to my pleasant surprise they were really good about it and took the stance that we had acknowledged we had a problem and were taking steps to resolve it!!
I felt so relieved once I had got it sorted with them, no more looking over my shoulder!
I was even more relieved 2 weeks later when I got an email from the HR manager informing me that he had been made aware that MBNA & Goldfish had both contacted his department asking for me and during the conversation just happened to mention that I was in arrears by several months!!!!!.........then I knew I had done the right thing...hope this helps

I wouldn't have thought it would matter. If you were going bankrupt, then possibly this would change things, but an IVA is a vehicle for repaying your debt effectively.

frequentflyer - I am surprised creditors can do that, is that not a breach of confidentiality?

cr15py....Very much so but it happened & both of those creditors 'let it slip' because I had changed my home number and so they were trying every possible avenue to get hold of me for their pound of flesh!!!
