One of our mobile phone contracts are up for re-newal soon. I have always paid my phone bill by Direct Debit so has always been paid on time. I want to stay with O2 as they have been very good and I am pleased with the service and tariffs they offer. Will I have any problems renewing it ?? Do mobile phone companies do a credit check everytime you renew ?

If it's just continuing with the existing contract and you not making a fresh application, then I doubt that they will do another credit check on you.

This would be at the discretion of the provider and would be allowable in an IVA.

Hi Caraf,

If you are upgrading your phone but remaining on the same monthly amount I dont think this should be a problem as I dont think they will credit check as they will just look back on your payment history.

This was covered before, provided you stay with the same company, there shouldn't be a problem - if you change providers (i.e. from O2 to Orange) then that's when the credit check might be an issue.

Even though you are staying with the same company, you need to be aware that if you get a new phone, you may be required to get a more expensive tariff to cover it, and you will be tied in to that contract for another 12 - 15 months. It will depend on the phone you get. But the tie in will be definate.

There shouldn't be a problem as long as you stay with O2.

I upgraded with Orange back in August for an 18 month terms and changed my tariff and i had no problems whatsoever!

I have just updated my contract (pre-IVA) with Orange, and they were fine as well - got a new phone (quite a snazzy one!) for the same conditions that I had before, no extra payment per month and still with the same minutes and texts.

But as the others have said, provided you don't change provider, there shouldn't be a problem I wouldn't have thought.

Not sure about the other networks but O2 seem to be quite harsh on credit checks. This was taken from their T&Cs.

We
may also perform subsequent searches for the purpose of risk assessment, debt
collection and fraud prevention with one or more credit reference agencies and/or
fraud prevention agencies whilst you retain a financial obligation to us.

Not saying they would do this but the T&Cs are very clear.
8. Ending the Agreement
8.1 In addition to anything else we can do, we can end the Agreement at any time
if:
(a) you fail to pay Charges when they are due, including any deposit we have
asked for or break this Agreement in any other material way and you do not
correct the situation within 7 days of our request;
(b) we have reasonable cause to believe that the Service is being used in a way
forbidden by paragraphs 6.3, 6.4 or 6.6, even if you do not know that the Service
is being used in such a way and you do not correct the situation within 7 days of
our request; or
(c) you are the subject of a bankruptcy order, or become insolvent, or make any
arrangement with or for the benefit of creditors or if being a company you go into
either voluntary or compulsory liquidation or a receiver is appointed over your
assets.

my hubby has changed his phone twice with 3 since his BR and has had no problems he is on contract, so as the others say as its not a new application i shouldn't thing there would be any problem. plus the fact he has never missed any payments.

I suppose O2 may carry these "further" checks if you were to start missing payments. If you missed a payment and they then found an IVA/BR order they may then stop your contract, but I am sure they have better things to do then carry out credit checks if your payments are 100% up to date.

Hubby is with orange and has upgraded since the iva with no problem. As said I think you would have problems with the credit check with a new provider but ok with the one you are with.
