Hi,

Just found out my car has failed MOT and its going to cost £250 to put right! There isn't a contingency plan in my husbands IVA - so don't know how I'm going to pay for this. I have to have a car for work, no public transport runs at the right times.

Just argued with Alun (husband) as I try to be supportive, but its his IVA and I guess I get fed up from time to time.

Sorry to rant, just helps to put it down into words, as I can't tell anyone else. [:(!]

Sorry to hear that, I'm just beginning to find out myself how difficult it is to find extra money for that little emergency. Any chance you can get one or two quotes from other garages to see if they can do it cheaper?

I totally sympathise with you, I've managed to keep my head above water just after a £808.10 plumbers bill. Any mechanic friends who might do the remedial work on the side one Saturday morning as a favour?

Wish I could help you there, but I don't know anyone.

Are you allowed to take a payment break? If so, surely this would constitute a good enough reason to take one?

No, Alun's shopped around and this is the cheapest - he is good for something today lol.

I think I'll phone IP and see what they suggest. We've never missed a payment so maybe there's something they can do. Just stressing me out, especially when I'm in work and trying not to take it out on others. I'll scrape a pound together and try the lottery tonight eh.

Talk to your IP as a payment break could be the answer.

With my plumbers bill, I had a bit of it but not all and spoke to my IP and I was able to miss £300 of the IVA payment that month and make it up by paying £60 per month extra so by September 08 I'll be back up to date. I'm sure there is something they can do. Worth a chat at least with them.

Alun's phoning the IP now, so fingers crossed. I'll let you all know ASAP.

Thanks for the support.

Hi - IP ( or someone) just phoned Alun back.Basically we have to send in receipts and pay a lesser amount this month. The shortfall can be spread over the length of the IVA. I still don't know how we'll make up the shortfall but at least it gets us out of a pickle today.

I guess the moral of the story is... don't stress, just call the IP.

Hi swans_girl

At least you can get the car fixed and it is not a huge sum to make up by adding extra to your iva payments every month.
There are bound to be things during the 60 months of an iva that can go wrong (think Lesley's boiler has proved that!!) but with flexibility between the IP and client and some common sense we should all be ok.

Hope you get it sorted asap
Emma x

Julie that's exactly what we did with our large bill. Few extra pounds a month and it'll soon be paid back

That's a good result and shows that you have a sensible IP!
