How do you feel once you have been declared BR?? What new problems does it cause? I would be grateful for your views on this, so I CAN MAKE MY MIND UP ON WHAT TO DO!! -Thanks

From my point of view I felt numb when I was made BR. I remember walking out of court holding the BR order and thinking how strange it was that a piece of A4 paper was going to change my life!

The next day I felt like I had one of those cartoon bubbles above my head and that everyone must know that I was BR - daft I know.

It can cause problems - when we moved we had to get contents insurance and one insurer asked if there was anyone at the address who was bankrupt or had a criminal record (I was really annoyed that they put those together!) and they didn't want to insure us when Dave said yes. If you are ever applying for anything (mortgage for example) and you are asked if you have ever been BR then you will need to answer yes - it's an offence not to.

I might not be able to upgrade to a 'proper' bank account (with Visa debit rather than Visa Electron card) until the BR has dropped off my credit files - this is 6 years from the date of the BR order.

BR is not pleasant, but it is nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Are you a homeowner or do you have any other assets that might be at risk?

Yeah I am a homeowner with 2 children and married, house is up on the market anyway and we have found a place to rent but just can not see the house selling so i don't know what worse or better for us we can not afford the mortage and if we cant sell the house shoudl we go BR or have the house repossessed I know you have it repossessed anyway when you go BR but I would still be left with all the other debts around me which I would have to pay and as for bank accounts I have lived on a cashpoint card for 2 years and I have found it not a problem, infact better for me.

Hiya,

I was fortunatly still living at home when I went bankrupt but I did have a very nice car which was taken away from me. That was really my only bad moment. I do regret getting into so much debt but have now learn't how to look after my money which is a good thing. When I was declared it was a big relief off my shoulder. it felt like a fresh start. some of my family still don't know as they are a bit snobby but my parents were great. it can be annoying not having a proper account or be able to get a small loan for a car but in the end im no longer in debt and its great!! The only nagging feeling i have now is that i may have affected my mums credit but I think it's all ok

I have been discharged early but I have never felt relief! It may be because of all the ongoing hassle we have had. The threatening letters did not stop for months after bankruptcy, we got court papers for a CCJ 4 months after B that we had to sort out. There always seems to be something. I think the fact that our OR Office don’t seem to know what they are doing has just added to our stress. We have been told on more than one occasion wrong info from them.

We are still be hassled by the mortgage company and secured loan company, as the house has not been sold yet, they keep saying we have to pay them the arrears and the shortfall, when it is realised.

Then there is the business with the IPA they are trying to get from hubby’s wage, we had £20 surplus but they disallowed optician costs, household insurance and cut the housekeeping so they could have the IPA! We are contesting it.

Then yesterday, I find I am liable for a council tax bill for my old house for whilst I was bankrupt and really I thought the OR would have the vested interest in the house?

Maybe, one day, when this is all well and truly over, I may feel relieved and be able to relax, but not yet. I have not slept properly for months now, I have terrible nightmares, they are worse when I have a drink so cannot blot it all out with booze! hahaha

I feel so sorry for you jane!! no wonder you don't feel relieved!! I remember I had a few people still phoning me and sending me letters. I sent a copy of my BR to every creditor who was hassling me and they all stopped apart from HSBC. Oh my god what a nightmare!! They wouldn't stop phoning so I ignored them and when I finally picked up it was a foreign guy who had no idea what i was saying. he couldn't understand that i was bankrupt, that he had to go through my OR and that I wasn't going to pay any of it back as it was out of my hands. I ended up having a go at him, telling him to leave me alone and hanging up on him. Never heard back then and it was nice to get my anger out :)
