I don't know if anyone is going to be able to help me, but there's no harm in asking! I know you cannot be bankrupt and a serving police officer, but is it possible to join the police after the bankruptcy is discharged? I have always wanted to join, but as this is obviously not an option at the moment I was wondering if I have to give up altogether.

It is not true that you cannot be bankrupt and serve as a police officer - merely that it is generally frowned upon by most forces.

Whether you will be allowed to join will depend upon the individual force's attitude to bankrupts, and to be honest the number of people applying for each post, where the recruiters can naturally be fairly selective. I would wait until you are discharged before applying - and perhaps you might like to think of applying to become a special constable first which gives you good brownie points when applying for a full time paid position.

Thanks Melanie. I don't even know if I'll apply yet (getting a bit old!), but at least I know there's a small chance I might be able to do it in a few years.
