When I started going through the IVA process in July 2006, like everyone else i was advised to open a bank account with i ban i didnt owe money to.

Which I did I went to Abbey explained my situation and they gave me a basic account, no charges no overdraft, they gave me a basic account as they did not have to do any credit checks.

Any way they did say if i ran the account correctly for 12 months they would consider uo grading it.

Any way i have just spoke to them and i have an appointment with one of the bank managers to discuss upgrading it to a visa debit saccount, cheque book but no overdarft.

I dont want an overdraft ever again in my life so i am fine with this.

I have been more than happy since july 2006 with the basic account git very good at budgeting, but i have lost count of the amount of times i have gone in shops gone to pay for something then realised i forgot to get some money out of the account.

Also never really did use a cheque book, but i have two instances this year were i needed to write a cheque and had to give some one the money to write a cheque on my behalf.

Any one else been able to upgrade the account whilst in an iva

I will Andy, from what I have read on this forumn it sounds too god to be true.

I am not holding my breath, but if i get an up grade on my account i will report it on here and i am sure ABBEY will get loads of account applications from people in an IVA.

I have to say i have two bank accounts and I applied for them by going in to the branches.

When i told both banks i was in a IVA both people i spoke to didnt know what an IVA was so i had to explain it, and then told them my credit score would be as bad as some one who is bankcrupt and both said no problem will give you account were we dont have to credit score.

Just one more thing Andy i cant come to the mmeting next month cause my partner is due to give birth at the end of feb, but if you hold any meetings in the midddle of the year in the north of england, can you let me know, would look forward to meeting you.

Hi As I mentioned on other post I have just opened an account with Alliance & Leicester before proposing an IVA as I had debt with my bank which was Abbey. Someone told me today that Santander (who own Abbey) are looking to buy A&L. Does that mean I will have to change accounts again if this happens?

I would recommend the Co-op Cashminder account - you get a Visa Electron card and internet banking.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

If Abbey issued a electronic use only point of sale debit card like SOLO or ELECTRON to basic account holders then it will simply be giving someone one of these cards. As it doesn't hence forth this interview for the next card up if you like. They should offer a standard debitcard as Halifax,RBS etc.

I changed banks before starting the IVA (then DMP) process. I wanted to make sure that wages and DD's were going to the right places before I announced to the world that I couldn't pay my debts. So basically filled out the Abbey form as I stood then. Have you got an IVA? - No. Are you bankrupt - No. So got my bank account with card and cheque book, but refused the OD facility. So that's one way round it. As long as you don't lie to them, what can they do?
